The Yangtze River Delta: Ningbo
Ningbo, in East China’s Zhejiang Province, has the same authority as provincial governments for economic administration and was one of the first major east coast cities to open to foreign trade. By 2010 the government wants the city to be “an important industrial city, a major base of heavy chemical industry, a principal foreign trading port in East China and the economic center of Zhejiang Province.”
Infrastructure
The city is only 160 kilometers south of Shanghai, but it has suffered for more than a century from the fact that Hangzhou Bay stands in the way. However, unlike Shanghai, it has a deepwater port, and is rapidly taking advantage of the newly opened Hangzhou Bay Bridge as an increased regional transport route directly to Shanghai. The 36-kilometer long bridge opened to traffic in May 2008 and reduces driving time between Shanghai and Ningbo from four to two hours.
It is three to four hours from Ningbo to Shanghai by rail and there are close connections to the regional cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou. There are two railway stations – in the north (freight) and south (passengers) of the city.
Lishe airport operates more than 40 domestic routes as well as international flights to foreign capitals like Singapore, Bangkok and Seoul.
Beilun Port (Ningbo) is well situated at the middle of the coastline of mainland China, just at the T-shaped joining point of north-south shipping line and the golden waterway of the Yangtze River. In 2007, Ningbo port cargo throughput reached 345 million tons, ranking second in mainland China and in the top fourth worldwide. All the global Top 20 shipping companies have established offices in Beilun Port.
