Possibly a typing error. "Conserve" and "Consume". It is appalling that China's growth rate can be a sustainable 10% over the past decade; but they can't prevent a species becoming extinct. Dolphins are high species too, you don't want too many of those disappearing. We're only a little further up the evolutionary chain. The first mammal to go extinct for 50 years is Chinese. It's a disgrace really.

In the book 'Last Chance To See', there's a lovely letter written by a foreign woman, who recounts her involvement with a Provincial Government Project to conserve the species. On the evening before she and her husband departed China, they were the guests of honour at an official dinner. The main course? Female Baiji Dolphin, complete with the foetus it had been near-term with.

Says it all, really.
