The West may certainly be enigmatic but I would agree, for most foreign investors its a long shot. The cities of Wuhan and Changsha though may pick up some of the South China relocation of factories that is going on to Vietnam and India.

Thanks guys, yes, its fun to look back on the old issues. I hadn't seen the one with the brown cover for years. There also (ahem) seemed to be far less of me in those days...Pieter, yes, when reviewing the copy it also struck me how much was still valid. However there is a lot of FDI in the West, and in from unsuspected sources - the Japanese are big investors there, and to some extent the South Koreans and Russians. Japan has over 200 JV's in the city of Yinchuan, in Ningxia province (China's smallest, and ethnically muslim) alone. I always enjoy travelling West, and we've had staff over there for much of the past six months both on projects and also researching the new book. It's not exactly the new promised land - but it's certainly one of the most interesting parts of China. We once did an entire issue of China Briefing about investing in Tibet - it's been deleted from the archives now it's so old - but I'll see if I can find it and get it online again for some interesting comparisons. - Chris

Those old issues on the subject still seem valid - maybe because the development of the West has lagged far behind that of the Eastern seaboard? A lot of info in this article, thanks.

I tell you what you guys - fanstastic resources. Totally brilliant, I take my hats off to you to be able to have done this in such detail and way back as well. China Briefing really does knock every other China business site off the planet. You constantly astound me and I am not easily pleased. Very well done.
