Devonshire-Ellis: Chinese clients in Mumbai safe

Nov. 27 - Chris Devonshire-Ellis, the senior partner of Dezan Shira & Associates, and publisher of our sister magazine India Briefing, and head of the firm’s India practice has been assured that the firm’s Chinese clients currently in Mumbai have all been reported as “safe” and are in secure places following the dreadful terrorist attacks that took place overnight and are still continuing in the city this morning.

“We have been on the phone all night with our offices in Mumbai and have been able to contact all Chinese clients in the city,” he said. “All are safe, although some were in hotels that were evacuated and had to bed down in a local restaurant. Our staff are all accounted for and all other clients, with the exception of one sole individual are all in secure areas and in no immediate danger. We are working with clients to arrange to bring them home if necessary, although at this moment the international airport remains closed. However all clients have been contacted and are secure.”

Mumbai has been under ongoing coordinated attacks since 10 pm last night in the busy Colaba district, the heart of the city’s business district. Both the Taj and Oberoi hotels, along with several restaurants, hospitals, and the city’s largest train station in the area were stormed by gunmen armed with machine guns and grenades. Apparently looking for Western businessmen, initial reports indicate at least 80 dead and over 200 injured. Hostages are believed to have been taken in the hotels and the army has been mobilized to deal with the developing situation.

“Obviously the situation is still unfolding,” says Devonshire-Ellis. “However, we are in touch with our clients and are advising them on what to do. If anyone requires information on Chinese nationals who are clients of ours in the city they may contact our Beijing office hotline: (010) 5979 6677 ex 602. We are making arrangements to secure alternative accommodation for those affected and will provide financial assistance and other support to clients who may require assistance in the city.”
