Japanese scientists see huge solar potential in Himalayas
According to Japanese researchers the Himalayas could become one of the hot spots for solar power development in the future.

A team of researchers have found that some of the coldest and highest places around the globe have better solar resource than some deserts. The Andes and Antarctica are among the other cold regions with solar power potential, according to the research. Continue reading

NCKU, Taiwan Generations venture into offshore wind power
The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), the Metal Industries Research and Development Center and Taiwan Generations Corp have joined hands on an offshore wind power project of up to 200-megawatt capacity.

The partners intend to build an offshore wind farm off Taiwan that would be capable to produce around 640 million kWh of power a year, the university said. The targeted output would be enough to meet the electricity needs of 130,000 local households. Continue reading

MOFCOM Ranks China’s Top Development Zones

Sept. 29 – China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) released its 2010 Rankings of National Economic and Technological Zones on September 21. At present, China has 128 national-level development zones, 90 of which were included in the 2010 MOFCOM rankings.

According to the rankings, the top 10 development zones remained unchanged from 2009. Most notably, TEDA has been ranked the best national development zone in China for the 14th consecutive year. Continue reading

China’s Most Polluted Cities – WHO Index

Beijing is the world’s 10th most polluted capital city

Sept. 28 – Lanzhou has been ranked at the bottom among Chinese cities in a World Health Organization study of the world’s most air polluted cities. The report, issued by the WHO yesterday, focuses on air particles known as PM10s (microscopic vehicle and dust specks of less than 10 micrometers, in 121 micrograms per cubic meter). China Renewable Energy Industry Report: Sept. 27

Sept. 27 – This is a regular series of relevant industry news from around China.

New hydropower capacity in China reaches 8.17 gigawatts in Jan-Aug 2011
China installed 8.17 gigawatts of new hydropower capacity and 32.24 gigawatts of thermal power capacity in the first eight months of 2011, data by the National Energy Administration show.

National power consumption from January through August reached 3,124 TWh, up 11.9 percent on the year.

Power generating facilities throughout China recorded average utilization hours of 3,211 hours, or 49 more than a year before. Hydropower installations registered average utilization hours of 2,100, down by 178. Continue reading

China to Launch Iron Ore Price Index

Sept. 26 – China, the world’s largest iron ore consumer, will launch a new iron ore price index of its own in October, in a bid to provide iron ore traders with more market information and have a greater say in global pricing.

The iron ore index, compiled by the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemical Importers and Exporters, as well as the Metallurgical Mines’ Association of China, will be released on a weekly basis starting in October. Continue reading

Air Products to supply gases to Chinese photovoltaic maker
U.S. industrial gases producer Air Products said on Sept. 5 it had sealed a gases supply agreement with China’s photovoltaics maker Hunan Gongchuang Photovoltaic Science & Technology Co Ltd.

Under the deal, Air Products will supply bulk and specialty gases to Hunan Gongchuang’s new silicon thin-film photovoltaic manufacturing facility in Hengyang City in China’s Hunan Province. Continue reading

China May Increase LCD Panel Tariff to 8%

Aug. 15 – China may lift import duties on LCD panels in order to motivate domestic LCD panel manufacturers and attract more foreign direct investors to build production lines in the country, according to a report by Right Site Asia, an online Asian industrial information platform. The tariff rate may jump to 8 percent from the current 5 percent.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced fiscal and policy support for domestic panel production back in 2008 in a bet to reduce the country’s heavy reliance on LCD panel imports from Japan and Taiwan. If the government approves the tariff hike this time, a number of traditional LCD exporters to China will likely lose competitiveness in prices. Continue reading
