Pre-Olympics Beijing living for the locals

Our China culture website, China Expat which has a great daily blog in its own right and also a monthly magazine, featured a photo essay on life in Beijing today, just a few months away from the Olympics.

The site handles business culture and travel in China and is a major website in its own right. The photos in the essay were all taken just three days ago, on the back streets behind the Dezan Shira & Associates Beijing offices at the Beijing Twin Towers. Yes, just a stone’s throw away from the glass and steel temples of capitalism, home to some of the countries premier law and tax firms, just off the main drag of Jianguomenwai – the main CBD road leading to Tiananmen Square – you can buy oranges from the back of a horse and cart, obtain a bowl of RMB1 noodles and generally step back away from the millions of dollar deals and into a city that remains in some ways unchanged. The contrasts in the city remain fascinating, but it’s people in these backstreets that are part of everyday business in China; understanding them is part of business success when conducting deals in China. To advise on China, you have to live there. The photo essay reveals the real modern day Beijing.

The article, with great photos, is here.
