The American Bar Association has just released the 4th Edition of the China Law Deskbook.  The product of over 20 years of progress and revision, the Deskbook has become the definitive guide on matters of China law. It is written by long-time friend of China Briefing, Jim Zimmerman, of Sheppard Mullin in Beijing. Jim’s regular updates on the China Law Deskbook will be featured on China Briefing.

Jim states: “It’s been a rewarding opportunity and a privilege to work on the ground in China as a registered foreign lawyer since 1998, and thus to witness and participate in China’s ongoing legal reforms over these years.”

The two-volume set, available for purchase here, is organized by broad topic categories and provides a summary of the critical legal issues for foreign-invested enterprises, including:

  • Corporate organizational structure
  • Industry-specific regulatory matters
  • Tax issues
  • Labor and employment
  • Financial regulation
  • Contracts
  • Liquidation and bankruptcy
  • Customs and the importation process
  • Intellectual property protection
  • Land use
  • Protection of the environment and natural resources
  • Mediation and arbitration
  • Litigation
  • Special rules for zones and administrative regions

Reviews of the China Law Deskbook:

Mark Duval – President, American Chamber of Commerce in the People’s Republic of China

“The China Law Deskbook is the definitive guide on China’s law and practice for American companies operating in China.  A must-have resource for industry players in China.”

Joerg Wuttke – President, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China

“The Deskbook is a helpful tool for all European companies in dealing with the complexities of China’s legal and regulatory system as they seek to capture the commercial opportunities of the complex market. As a long-time hands on actor in the legal field, and as former Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce China, Zimmerman has had the unique opportunity to witness China’s ongoing legal reform from various angles, and it shows: the Deskbook is up to date, practical and about to become a classic.”

Chris Devonshire-Ellis – Publisher, China Briefing

“Zimmerman’s China Law Deskbook has become the standard and to-go reference material on the complex and continually evolving subject of China law. Well laid out, easy to navigate and meticulous in its detail and understanding of the multiple factors influencing the development of China law and practice, it is an essential piece of any corporate counsels armoury in providing assistance in navigating what continues to be a challenging, yet fascinating subject of primary commercial interest. Do not leave this book behind when structuring China investments.”
